Grooved vs Perforated vs Slotted Wood Panels: What's the Difference?

You've decided on wood acoustic panels for your next project. Great choice! Now you have to choose between which perforation works best with the desired design intent of the interior space. Grooved, Perforated, and slotted panels can be mounted on ceilings and walls. All options off a natural wood veneer face, HPL (laminate), painted finish, or custom finish. All options available will absorb sound through the front side perforations and into the acoustical backing. So what actually separates them? Well, depends on the NRC rating needed in the space and the overall look the designer is opting for.

Let’s understand in detail what helps you choose the best option for your upcoming project.

First, all options carry a different look

Grooved wood panels have tight, parallel channels cut across the wood face. These grooves are narrow — 3mm wide. The flat wood (or slat) in between varies depending on the style: 5mm on the G8, 13mm on the G16, wider still on the G32. The result is linear texture & appearance. Beautiful. Clean. Focal point and acoustics achieved!

Perforated wood panels have many variations to choose from! Perforation sizing from 1mm to 9mm holes. Micro Perforated P104, P316, P616, P916, PL316, PL616, and PL916 are part of the common standard line up but custom perforation sizing and center to center spacing can be customized to fit the overall design.

Slotted wood panels use elongated openings, and have a very unique and modern look. The S56 and SL56 patterns create a strong visual rhythm. The kind of wall treatment that draws the eye intentionally.

All perforated options include the same material, but have very different visual personalities.

Second, they both sound different

It becomes technical at this point, but it's important to comprehend.

The smaller the front side perforations are, the tighter the squeeze is for the nose to travel through and into the acoustical backing. Paired with a 2" fiberglass backing, they can achieve above 0.75 NRC. The more solid surface area (for instance G32) the more sound will reflect off of the surface. Same goes for the slotted patterns. Please refer to the TerrAcoustics Architectural Flipbook for the acoustical variations with each pattern available and acoustical backing tested with the pattern.

So, Which One Is Right for Your Project?

Ask yourself two questions before choosing one perforation over another.

What kind of noise are you solving?

Conversational noise, echo, or mid-range buildup? Larger spaces, lower frequency reverberation, or performance environments? Connect with a registered acoustician or contact our team to discuss further!

What does the design call for?

Visual appeal or high acoustical performance rating?

When in doubt, use the option that fits the NRC rating required or choose a pattern that fits your overall design goal. Any perforation can achieve acoustical performance based on the system  buildout which is done on site. Either with a 2” acoustical backing, plus a ¾” MDF panel, you will need about 3 inches off of the wall or ceiling. 1” acoustical backing will come off the wall or ceiling about 2 inches. We know projects have limitations on the walls or ceilings so it is important to review what is needed acoustically and visually.

Custom sizes, a variety of veneer alternatives, and Class A fire-rated combinations are available for both types of panels. To request samples or for a project price, just give TerrAcoustics® a call at (949) 215-7979.

FAQs About Grooved & Slotted Wood Panels

Are grooved, perforated, and slotted panels installed the same way?

Yes. All panels can mount on locally sourced wood furring strips with the option to use Z-Clips or Z-Clip Bars, screws or nails, or the option to use a Lock tight glue. Edges of panels can have tongue-and-groove (recommended for groove panels) or square edge profiles.

Do they come in the same wood finishes?

Yes. All TerrAcoustics Panels are available with our standard natural wood veneers

Which is more popular for commercial projects?

The grooved style is the most specified overall, especially the G16 or G32. But any selected perforation will look great in an interior setting while also enhancing acoustics.

Can I see samples before specifying?

Absolutely. Contact the team for physical samples and acoustic data sheets before finalizing your specification. Wood is a natural material. Variations in temperature and humidity may cause subtle changes in appearance between the sample and your final product.
